What a Coincidence!

There are many incidents in my life that have made me believe so. In fact, such incidents that we attribute to coincidences happen every now and then. If you look back and analyse, you will realise that there is a profound purpose to every such happening.

I will narrate one that took place about two decades ago. My wife had received an SMS message that had given her nightmares. It talked about performing certain rituals for Santoshi Mata. Further, the message said that the recipient should consider themselves blessed for having received the message. It urged the recipient to forward the same to 30 others who would do likewise in turn.

This gave my wife a sleepless night. First of all, she was not a believer in Santoshi Mata.  Neither did she know which of her contacts were. She did not have too many contacts either and wanted to forward the message to some of my contacts too.

I told her that I was not willing to share my contacts with her. I tried my best to explain that these tricks were just a money-making racket on the part of the service providers.

We visited a temple to put forth our predicament to the Goddess Santoshi Mata. Typically, Hindu temples have many idols of God. The one we visited had a giant Bajrangbali right in the front and next to it was the lingam of Lord Shiva on one side and an idol of Shri Ganesha on the other. There were smaller statues of Durga Mata, Laxmi Mata, Santoshi Mata and other deities.

At the end of the temple were the statues of navagrahas (nine celestial bodies), these being the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the ascending and descending lunar nodes.

We rightfully have many manifestations of God as each one emphasises a particular human characteristic. We need all this to strike an inner balance.

As we stood in front of the idol of Goddess Santoshi Mata to seek pardon, we saw a woman in a torn sari, apparently needy, in front of us. She was down on her knees with tears flowing from swollen eyes, repeatedly calling out ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’.

We looked at each other and realised that it was best to offer all the money we had brought as an offering to the Goddess, to her follower. The woman’s eyes sparkled but she was reluctant to accept the large sum of money being offered. We told her that we had been instructed to hand it over to her.

She went back thanking the Goddess for this miracle. Her faith was reinforced. This set our minds at rest and we came away feeling happy.

Everything happens for a good purpose. The purpose the mind comprehends is called ethics. What comes before it is morals; it is what your heart desires.
